Public speaking is an art. There are so many things to public speaking that you will never quite be able to master it. You can only come close.

Why is it such an art? What do you have to know in order to deliver a great presentation?

Know Your Audience

One of the most important parts of speaking in public is to know your audience. If you know your audience then this will give you a huge advantage. Before giving a public speaking speech or presentation ask yourself these questions:

How old is my audience? From what ethical background are they? How much do they earn on average? What do they wear?

All of these things can help you to deliver a better presentation. Really get to know your audience, make jokes that they like but don't offend them. This will all be easier once you know what kind of people they are.

Preparation

Only masters of public speaking know that preparation is the key to a great public speaking speech. People new to public speaking think that they are just naturally good at speaking. They may be but most of this confidence and ability to speak well comes from their preparation.

Outline your public speaking speech before holding it. Ask your friends to take a look at it. Meet friends who are similar to the audience you are talking to and tell them the joke you were going to say in your public speaking speech. Then look at their reaction.

All this will give you a great advantage with your public speaking speech. And the best effect of this is that you will also feel much more comfortable walking on that stage because you have prepared yourself for what will happen.

Self-Control

To master the art of speaking in public you need a lot of self-control. What I mean by this is that you need to be able to use your body language effectively. But not only your body language but also your voice.

Create excitement when excitement is due. After telling a joke make sure to pause for a second to let it sink in. All these are signs of mastering speaking in public.
