Steps
1
Think about what’s right for you.
Do you want to set aside time every day for spiritual contemplation, or
just once a week? What time of day best suits your temperament?-
2Find a place where you can just sit and relax. It should be quiet and soothing in appearance without a lot of distractions.
-
3If you want, listen to some music. It can be classical or new age, as long as it puts you in a reflective and open mood.
-
4Now that you are in an open frame of mind, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Allow your jaw to relax, and release any tension from your body.
-
5Let your thoughts wander toward your life. Not toward you as a person; rather your life-force, or the energy inside you. Try to feel that energy.
-
6Can you feel your life-force? There is an unlimited amount of potential inside you. What do you want to do with your energy? Where do you want it directed? This is a good time to think about the direction you want your life to go.
-
7At the same time, keep in mind how small you are in relation to the planet. Your life doesn’t matter in the scheme of things – your problems are insignificant. Let them go.
-
8Realize that no matter how small you are, you are also huge. Your ability to connect is infinite. Gandhi and Hitler are two people that made an enormous amount of difference in their connection to the rest of the world. Think about the difference you can make, even in your limited situation.
-
9Ponder the source of the energy within you. Ask questions. Is it the same life flowing through other living beings? Are we all connected, sharing this life-source? Is unlimited? Is it precious? Where does it come from? Where does it go?
-
10Those are just a few questions that we can’t answer. Really, humans aren’t in a position to get definite answers. Again, think of how small you are. Who are you to know the answers to life?
-
11On that note, be wary of people who claim to know the correct way. Every person is unique, he/she will find a way that suits him/her.
-
12All people seek answers; that is part of what makes us human. Recognize your desire for answers, and allow yourself to be open to the questions that you pose. Explore possibilities. They are unlimited.
-
13You can make this spiritual contemplation as long and as deep as you feel comfortable with. If you feel like just resting your mind through meditation, that is another good way to become centered and steeped in spirituality.
-
14Once you are done, something to take with you from the experience is awareness. Be conscious every day of the decisions you make, however big or small. Your actions are what ultimately bring you closer to being the person you really want to be.
-
15As Victor Frankl said, the last and greatest of human freedoms is the ability to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance. Choose your own way.
