Once surreptitiously stashed in bedside-table drawers, only to be brought out during those drier-than- Chardonnay sex sessions, lube is emerging from the shadows and taking center stage. "Women used to be embarrassed about buying lubricant, because they felt it meant they couldn't get aroused on their own. But now couples use it to enhance the great sex they're already having," says Linda Banner, Ph.D., a sex and marital therapist in San Jose, California. "Not only does lube let both partners move more rhythmically and easily but it also helps conduct sensations, which increases the odds of climax." Follow these tips to reach new heights of pleasure.
Chill Out
Cold lube on a hot body heightens skin sensitivity. Pop a lube cube (Durex Play Quiver freezable lubricant cubes, $7, drugstore.com) into the freezer for two hours, then trace chilly trails over each other's stomachs, backs, and legs. Unlike real ice cubes (which leave you cold and wet), these warm to your body's temperature, so you can transition right to intercourse, says sex therapist Sandor Gardos, Ph.D. Don't have any cubes on hand? Chill a bottle of lubricant in the fridge and drizzle the cold liquid over each other's hot spots.
Amp Up Intercourse
Lube allows for easier penetration and thrusting, which helps build the momentum you both need to climax. Also, the extra slipperiness makes you feel even more excited because it mimics the moisture caused by genuine arousal, says Jane Greer, Ph.D., a marriage and sex therapist in New York City. There's just one problem: All that added moisture can cause slippage. Get into missionary and throw one leg—or both—over his shoulder. This angle will tilt and tighten your vaginal canal, allowing you to maintain a good grip.
Pour Some Sugar on Him
Let's be honest: Performing oral sex can be a lot of work. That's where flavored lube comes in (try Skin Honey in Chocolate Honey, $22, bootyparlor.com). The pleasant taste makes it a sweeter experience for you, and the extra moisture keeps things slippery well beyond the point when you'd usually be getting dry mouth. Just remember: The sugary stuff isn't recommended for intercourse, so make sure your guy washes it off before sex or you'll risk developing a yeast infection, says certified sexuality educator Lou Paget, author of Hot Mamas.
Cut Down on Friction
Certain members of the Jersey Shore cast excluded, most women will tell you that hot-tub lovin' isn't all it's cracked up to be. That's because "water washes away the natural moisture your body produces and actually increases friction," explains Gardos. "So, as ironic as it sounds, you can end up feeling kind of dry even though you're dripping wet." To make tub or shower action feel more pleasurable, rub a silicone lubricant on his penis before getting wet. "It sits on top of the skin and doesn't get absorbed, so it's long lasting as well as waterproof," says Gardos.
