Steps
1
Identify your needs. Just note the facts. Details come later. You will know the direction in which to take your search once you identify the needs.-
2Search for organizations that help individuals by providing personal needs grants in your area of need. Do not, however, pay money for a list of organizations that help individuals or to be included in any other registry.
- Legitimate programs will be well-accredited, and it is your responsibility to check for certification.
- The U.S. Department of Health and Services (http://www.hhs.gov/children/index.html) offers housing, health, environmental issues and other areas of financial help to people through varied services.
- Grants.gov ([1]) http://www.grants.gov/applicants/apply_for_grants.jsp)] is another source for grants similar to those mentioned above. These, however, sometimes include cash grants.
- Major charitable organizations know what donor would be a good fit to help in your situation. Call (or look them up on line) a major charitable organization if you do not know how to begin your search.
-
3Contact the grant-making organization and list your needs and the reasons they exist. Consider the following circumstances, each requiring assistance with expenses beyond the individual's reach.
- You're newly-disabled and find yourself in need of help with medical equipment. Call your insurance company, if you have one, for contacts. Medical assistance programs, such as Medicare, can also guide you.
- You've been laid off from your job and need help with utility bills and rent. Utility companies often have funds set up for grants to customers who find themselves unable to make ends meet temporarily. Local United Way facilities have information on the rent questions.
- Home improvement issues are beyond your abilities and finances because you're retired and living on a fixed income. Contact municipal offices, senior service centers or the local housing authority to inquire about financial aid.
- The lack of childcare availability is a major problem today. Check with the Department of Health and Services in your state to find out more about these services. The United Way has instituted programs geared toward creating quality, safe childcare programs on the neighborhood level.
