Steps
1
Pretend you did not hear the request for your number. Subtly ignore it and change the conversation.-
2Say that you don't have a cellphone, that your previous one got lost or broken. At best this will throw the person off, and at the very least it will buy you time. You are not required to justify this: if the person asks why you don't have a phone, just say "I just don't", or "personal reasons".
-
3Just say "Sorry, I can't give that to you." This may take courage on your part, but it is not rude, just honest. If they persist after you say this, then they are the one being rude. You may even have the opportunity to offer a justification such as "I don't give my number to strangers." or "I only use my cellphone for my work contacts." but this is not necessary. You could also offer an alternative and less personal means of contact, such as email or internet social media.
-
4As a last resort, offer a fake number. If you do this, make sure in advance that your cellphone is turned off and hidden, if it is with you. This way, they cannot watch your cellphone to make sure it rings if they try your number.
