How to Wash Your Clothes

Just because it says dry clean only doesn't mean you have to drop it off. Here's how to wash your nicer clothes — no matter what they're made from.

Cashmere: Hand-wash with warm water and Woolite. Lay flat to air-dry. No wringing out.

Wool: Hand-wash, or machine wash on gentle in cold water. No wringing out.

Suede: Take it to a leather-goods cleaner. Seriously. Anything you do could damage it.

Leather: Wash at home for light surface care. Use a damp towel to remove dirt caused by everyday wear. Excessive rubbing could damage the hide. For more serious damage, look into leather soap (try Meltonian or Leather Mate) and follow directions. If, however, you get a stain in the hide, a leather-care shop may have to refinish it.

Silk: Wash small spots only at home. For spot treatment, dab Shout wipes on the fabric and let dry.
