Microsoft Security Essentials replaced Windows Defender in Windows Vista and Windows 7 as Microsoft's free anti-virus and anti-malware software but was itself replaced by a new anti-virus version of Windows Defender in Windows 8. Microsoft Security Essentials checks every program for viruses as they open. Most computers have several programs that start each time Windows opens. Having Microsoft Security Essentials check each startup program for viruses can slow down your startup process. You can configure Microsoft Security Essentials to exclude programs you are confident are safe and free from viruses.

Review Startup Programs

Step 1Click the "Start" button to access the Start menu.
Step 2Type "msconfig" in the search window and hit "Enter" to open the System Configuration applet.
Step 3Select the "Startup" tab. You may need to expand the Startup Item column to be able to see the whole name of the programs in the startup list. The path to the executable is located in the Startup column.
Step 4Note the name and path of the programs you would like to exclude from Microsoft Security Essentials.
Step 5Click "Ok." The System Configuration applet will close.

Exclude Programs from MSE

Step 1Click the "Start" button and select "Microsoft Security Essentials" from the All Programs list.
Step 2Select the "Settings" tab.
Step 3Select "Excluded Processes" in the list of available settings.
Step 4Click the "Browse" button.
Step 5Expand the appropriate folders in the tree to find the executable (_.exe) program you would like to exclude from Microsoft Security Essentials.
Step 6Select the program and then click "OK."
Step 7To exclude multiple programs, repeat steps 4-6.
Step 8Once you have selected all the programs you wish to exclude, click the "Add" button.
Step 9Click "Save Changes."
Step 10If the User Account Control window opens, click "Yes."
Step 11Close Microsoft Security Essentials by clicking "X." On your next reboot, Microsoft Security Essentials will skip the anti-virus check for those programs, speeding up your startup.

Tip

  • It is generally not necessary to run multiple anti-virus software programs on the same computer and if you do they may block one another or make your computer behave strangely. Anti-virus software runs constantly and consumes both memory and processor time.
