Grooming
Working at a hotel means you are the face of the hotel, whether you are greeting a guest on arrival or cleaning their rooms. So it is of utmost importance to have high personal grooming standards and be well maintained. Uniforms should always be ironed and fresh, nails should be clean and filed, and hair should be neatly styled and pulled back from the face. Workers should avoid smoking while in uniform so they don’t run the risk of smelling like stale cigarette smoke when dealing with customers. Also, women should wear basic, neat cosmetics and men should shave daily.
Leadership Skills
If you have studied at a top hotel school in Sydney and wish to go straight into management, you will need to possess excellent leadership skills. You will likely be in charge of a large roster of staff so you will need to be equipped to motivate staff and have the ability to lead a team. This can include anything from putting together a roster to conflict management between staff. You will also be the person who is called upon when there is any kind of problem, so you need to be a problem solver and feel comfortable dealing with difficult situations.
Communication and Organisation Skills
Most hotels will have staff working around the clock, with no true business hours. Because of this, staff will work in shifts and even if your particular position happens to be 9-5 there will still be someone else who comes in after you and needs to pick up where you have left off. Therefore, it is vital for a hotel worker to be very organised and also have great communication skills. Colleagues will need to handover ongoing work and customer requests and it is very important nothing is left out or forgotten.
Also, for anyone in a customer facing role, communication skills are deeply required to do the job well. Communicating with guests from all over the world can sometimes be difficult but it will be part of the day-to-day job.
People Skills
Not only will you need to learn to effectively communicate with people from different parts of the world, you will also need to learn to deal with different personality types as well. Working with guests all day long, day in and day out, will mean you need to be a people person and actually like working with people. If you are someone who cannot tolerate other people then this is not the career path for you. On the flip side, if you have a genuine manner and enjoy helping people then you will go far in hotels as a profession.
