Get Qualified
This is probably the most important tip to becoming a well paid
executive. Most companies have certain things that they look for when
they are hiring people for executive positions and this usually includes
a combination of experience. The big thing education wise is that it is
pretty much required that you have an MBA. The good news is that this
is something that you can get no matter what your education
background, Ray Debbane the CEO of Invus for example got his MBA after
earning a bachelor's degree in agriculture, he now runs a successful
investment firm. There are lots of other courses and professional
development opportunities that you will be expected to take during your
career.
Track Your Achievements
One of the keys to getting any job is to be able to show what you
have accomplished during your career. This is true whether you are
applying for a new job or up for a promotion at your existing job. The
closer you get to becoming an executive the more important it will
become. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is to talk about
what they do rather than what they achieve. Rather than being able to
say that you were in charge of a marketing campaign for example you want
to be able to talk about how much the marketing campaign you were in
charge of increased sales by. You want to have measurable achievements
and you want to make sure that you boss knows about them.
Network
Again this is something that you have to do to get any job but
becomes critically important if you want to become an executive. In this
case you will want to network with people both within your current
company and at other companies. The reason to network in the company
should be obvious; it will help to make sure that people know who you
are. Networking with people at other companies can be even more helpful
for a couple of reasons. The first is that you may well have to change
employers to become an executive. The other reason is that your network
may be able to help you in your current job. Don't be afraid to network
with people in other industries, it is not at all uncommon for
executives to change industries so you never know when this can come in
handy.
