Some women get lucky and stumble across the love of their life without even looking for him. However, most of us who aren’t starring in romantic comedies aren’t that fortunate.
You might have to go through dozens of guys before you even come close to realizing what you’re actually looking for in a partner. Failed relationships are a learning experience, so don’t freak out if all of your relationships are short-lived.
Dating is complicated, so don’t feel like you’re alone in your confusion. Here are a few ways to figure out what type of guy is right for you so that you don’t waste your time with the wrong one:

1. Date Around

The simplest way to figure out what type of guy is right for you is to date around. Once you’ve gotten some experience, you can think back to your past relationships to see what you liked about your exes and what ruined your relationships with them. If you broke up with one after he yelled at you for having male friends, you need a guy who is more trusting and understanding. If you broke up because he never made the time to hang out with you, you need to find a guy who is willing to rearrange his schedule for you.

2. Look at Your Friends

Which of your friends could you picture dating? It’s an awkward question to think about, but it’ll help you figure out what traits you need in a partner. Do you love your gal pal’s sense of humor? Then you need to find a guy with a similar taste. Does it drive you crazy that your best buddy is always late? Then you need someone who won’t leave you waiting.

3. Make New Friends

You can’t always associate with the same type of people. You need to branch out by finding friends with different interests and lifestyles as you. If you’re always hanging out with the same group, how could you possibly figure out what kind of guy you’re meant to be with? You won’t even know what else is out there until you go out and see for yourself.

4. Think about Celebrities

The celebrities that you’re in love with may be unattainable, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t help you out. Think about all of the famous men that you’ve had crushes on and see what they have in common. If they’re all super athletic, then you should probably look for a football player to date. If they’re all sentimental romantics, then you should probably keep an eye out for a poet.

5. Keep Your Options Open

Instead of focusing all your attention on one man and trying to get him to ask you out, flirt with a bunch of men. Just because you bat your eyes at them doesn’t mean that you have to end up in a relationship, you know. Start up conversations with as many men as you can to see which ones you click with the best. You could even try speed dating if you get the chance.

6. Forget about His Hotness

You can probably imagine your dream guy in your head. However, you can’t let a guy’s looks determine whether or not you’re going to give him the time of day. The perfect man for you might look completely different than you’re imagining. If you genuinely want to find the right guy for you, you have to stop paying attention to looks and only focus on personality.

7. Try Taking Quizzes

A lot of the quizzes you’ll find online will be bogus. However, you might as well give them a try to see what they tell you. Type in “relationship quizzes” on Google and scan through your options. You could end up stumbling upon a quiz that gives you a response that’s spot on. It won’t take up too much of your time, so it’s worth a shot.

8. Know Yourself

Take some time to really think about your likes, dislikes, and hobbies. If you absolutely love to be outdoors and hate relaxing on the couch, you need to find someone who isn’t a couch potato. If you have an obsession with dogs and own several of them, you need to be with someone who also enjoys canines. If they’re allergic and refuse to be around your pups, how could you ever have a serious relationship?
Once you figure out what you’re looking for, it’ll be much easier to find it. Plus, knowing what you want will save you from wasting your time with a guy who wouldn’t stay in your life for long, anyway.
Just don’t become so obsessed with finding a guy who fits all of your qualifications. Once you figure out what you want, you should think of it as a loose guideline. You’re never going to find someone exactly like the man in your head, so make sure that you don’t turn down a great guy because one little thing is different than you’ve imagined.
