Steps
1
Practice safety regarding location and whereabouts.
The majority of nanny interviews will take place inside a person's
residence, so special safety guidelines should always be practiced.
- Always let friends or family know where you are going to be at the time of the interview.
- Ask for references or perform a background check on parents or other members of the family you are interviewing for.
- If you are not comfortable meeting at the residence, suggest to your interviewer that you prefer to meet in a quiet public location such as a library venue or coffee shop.
-
2Prepare for your nanny interview.
- Make sure to bring a copy of your resume and references, as well as copies of any certifications you have that pertain to the nanny business.
- Bring valid personal identification such as a driver's license or birth certificate.
-
3Bring a list of our own questions to the interview, especially any that will "make or break" your decision to work for the family.
- Ask if you will be expected to perform any extra duties in addition to watching the children; such as laundry, running errands, tutoring, pet care and more.
- Learn how the parents discipline their children and what guidelines they expect you to follow.
- Find out if the children have special medical needs or behavioral challenges.
-
4Dress appropriately.
- Make sure your appearance is well-groomed and professional. Since you may be meeting the children, you may want to choose an outfit that is professional, yet comfortable and child-friendly at the same time.
-
5Be punctual and arrive on time.
-
6Be prepared to answer nanny-specific interview questions.
- Common questions will include the parents asking you why you left the last family you worked for, how you deal with medical emergencies, why you enjoy working with children and more.
- Always be honest and truthful when answering questions and be polite if you do not feel comfortable answering a specific question.
-
7Show a genuine interest in the children.
- Since your job as a nanny revolves around spending time with the children, make you sure you make an effort to connect with them if they are present during the interview. This will make a good impression on the parents and show you are a great candidate for the position.
-
8Follow up after your nanny interview.
- If you do not hear back from a family within a week, send them a note to thank them for their time and for their interest. You may want to explain why you are the best fit for the position.
