One often underestimated way to improve your communication skills is to focus on the way you speak and pronounce words. After all, everything from making friends to closing a sale is that much harder when the person you’re speaking is struggling to understand you!
You might be surprised at how much these four basic tips can boost anyone’s communication skills:
1. Speak up.
It’s important to know how to project your voice without shouting. Taking deep breaths and putting energy into your speech certainly helps. So does practicing public speaking and just being confident about your communication skills.
2. Slow down.
Different people need different amounts of time to process what they hear. Veer on the side of caution and speak relatively slowly to make sure the listener is keeping up.
In addition to intentionally speaking a bit slower, pause after making a major point. It gives the listener extra time to allow what you said to sink in, and the silence adds a bit of drama to your speech.
3. Open your mouth a little wider.
If you’re in the habit of mumbling, chances are not you’re not opening your mouth widely enough when you speak. Try to open your mouth a little more when speaking, especially with vowels. The trick, of course, is to sound natural while doing it.
4. Emphasize plosive sounds at the end of words.
“Plosive sounds” refer to b, d, g, k, p, and t. If you place a piece of paper in front of your lips, you should see it move when you pronounce them.
Ending plosive sounds are especially important for clear speech. To train yourself, read out loud at home and practice pronouncing these ending plosive sounds in an exaggerated manner. That way, during normal speech, you’ll be able to say them clearly without being over-the-top.
Remember, just applying these four skills can give your communication skills a huge boost.
When you keep the basics in mind and focus on how well your audience understands you, the whole communication process becomes easier.

opening the mouth when speaking should also be moderated . .. people over do things .... no one would listen to a speaker who's mouth is wider than it should be
