Understand what the speaker is talking about. Before moving on to other steps, it's probably a good idea to know what the speaker is discussing in case you need to know some things later.

    Take notes. This will occupy your hands and your mind as you listen intently on what the speaker is saying. Leave room in the margins for doodling in case there is a lull in note-taking opportunities.

    Shut out the speaker and think of something you can plan. Day-dream about how to rearrange furniture in your living room, or something like that. Thinking about plans distracts your brain and keeps it occupied because you have to think of so many different things at once.

    Draw or write. For those who like it, drawing is a great way to counter boredom. It doesn't have to be a Picasso, just some doodling here and there. Writing is also a good thing to do. Like day-dreaming about plans, it causes your mind to think about many things at once.

    Pretend that the speaker is speaking in an Austrian accent, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, it's funny when its a very boring subject, imagine how much energy Arnold would have right now.
