We love our braids as much as the next girl - they're versatile, convenient and super low maintenance. But as great as braids are, there could also be some downsides to it, especially when they're not well cared for.
With the convenience of wearing this hairstyle its easy to neglect caring for the hair adquately. It's important that regardless of what hair style we have one, we still care for our natural hair.
To this end, here are 6 do's and dont's we should observe while wearing braids.

  • DO care for your natural hair by constantly cleaning and moisturising it to prevent a build up of dandruf. You can use apple cider vinegar or even diluted shampoo in a bottle and cotton wool to clean the hair so the scalp isn't dirty and smelly.
  • DON'T have the braids done too tightly as this can put pressure on the hair follicles leading to hair loss especially in the front area where the hair is sensitive.
  • DO avoid super tiny braids as it could put pressure on the hair follicles and cause it to break as well.
  • DON'T wear braids for more than 6 weeks as this can cause the hair begin to break when you eventually take out the braids.
  • DO let the hair down every now and then as constantly pulling the hair around the edges in the name of styling can cause hair to break and eventually thin out especially in the front area.
  • DON'T sleep without covering the hair preferably with a silk scarf as this will help the hair look neat over time.
