If you have a child that is 7-12 and you need to find a good way to communicate with him/her then use this article to help.

Steps

1
Prepare: Understand that the kid is a person, too. They also have a perspective, so try to see it.
  1. 2
Don't try to use baby talk, or act like they're immature or babies. However, be in charge and in control, as they must realize that you are not peers.
  2. 3
Sit down and talk to them. Try to see their perspective on the situation, and help them to understand consequences. Be careful, however, to not be threatening.
  3. Fall Asleep on Christmas Eve Without Any Medicine Step 5.jpg
    4
Try including rewards for your child to listen. If this does not work go on to the step.
  4. Forget a Spoiler Step 2.jpg
    5
Try using slang like your child might. If this does not work continue reading.
  5. Teach Your Child About Budgeting Step 5.jpg
    6
Use things your child likes to your advantage. For example, if your child likes basketball try comparing what you need to say to basketball. If this doesn't work go to the next step.
  6. Cope when Boys Tell You You're Fat Step 5.jpg
    7
See a family or child therapist. Once you have done this follow the therapist's instructions.

Tips

  • Realize that they have a different personality, and will handle problems differently.
  • Warnings

  • Be careful not to use threats or bribery! These are short lived and only work a few times and won't improve your relationship with the child. This will keep them from listening to you.
